Co Training Boxing and BJJ?
Is co training in boxing and bjj at the same time bad? Is there any thing about these two styles that will contradict with each other because I really want to learn a stand up and ground game. Also, please don't leave answers suggesting to take a different style because these are the two I want to train in.
No its not bad to cross train Boxing with BJJ infact if you will do diligent research that most BJJ practitioners of old especially the Gracies and the original Brazilian Top Team (Mario Sperry, Murilio Bustamante, Noguiera Brothers) have all cross trained in Boxing. This is actually one of two preferred striking arts (other is Muay Thai) that BJJ practitioners often use.
BJJ practitioners of old generally use Boxing particularly the Jab as an opening for shooting or closing the gap for takedowns which in BJJ's case generally sacrifice or leg trip types. They wont really contradict each other infact Boxing hip/ core movements and principles actually are one of the frame methodologies to effective Ground and Pound which is in use with that of different upper body strikes such as hammerfists, palm strikes and elbow.
I just recommend and advise that you avoid using as a strategy the "infighting" of boxing since it only exists in the sport. In MMA or Muay Thai style Kickboxing "infighting" is modified to "Dirty Boxing" which isn'treally taught much in Boxing gyms today. Also not to be used in doing wide and over angled to the side stances that Boxing generally uses to lessen getting hit since its susceptible to Leg kicks and wrestling shoots. Other than that their Conditioning is a great and recommendable workout. Happy Training!
