can you be born with quick punches?
is it true some people can be born with quicker/speed punch? cause i read it somewhere but idk
Absolutely. Just like some people are naturally faster at running than others, some people are naturally quicker at extending their limbs.
Its very similar. Punching uses several muscles just like running does, meaning that its not just your triceps flexing when you punch, but your shoulders, chest, part of the back, lats, abs (anteriors aka boxers muscle) and even the legs to some degree.
Hence building mass on these muscle groups will improve power, but will do little for speed.
Yes, speed can be improved massively through practice and repeated punching, but I'm convinced there are other factors apart from technique involved.
It COULD be something to do with the actual muscle fibers of a person. It is very well known in the boxing world, or the sports science world rather, that a higher ratio of fast-twitch fibers will result in quicker muscle contraction, albeit at a higher rate of fatigue.
So it stands to reason that a person with a genetically higher ratio of fast to slow-twitch fibers in their muscles will be able to punch much quicker, naturally.
However, there are 2 types of fast twitch fibers; types a and b.
Type a fibers act like a mix between fast-twitch-b and slow twitch fibers. Type b fibers would give the most rapid contraction, but would fatigue the quickest.
Given the above, it would make sense that a person with a freakishly high number of of fast-twitch-a fibers would have a superb foundation to build technique on.
I'm not being racist, but there has been research which suggests that Western Africans generally have a higher ratio of fast-twitch fibres in comparison to other peoples which is probably why there have been so many successful boxers and other athletes of Western African descent. Mind you, Eastern Africans are known to have generally high amounts of slow-twitch muscle which is probably why they have been dominating long distance running for so long.
Of course, there are ways in which we can improve speed and power of punches without building/shedding mass but by manipulating our bodies to increase certain types of muscle fibers (or so we like to think). For example, plyometric exercises. These do wonders for power and speed by using tension-building motions, and any realistic boxer uses them to in their workouts.
Apart from everything mentioned above, other factors that promote faster punches could be lighter bones (probably why most really fast punching boxers have been known to have brittle hands?), tendon structure, bone structure (eg small ribcage?) and probably many other reasons.
