If you had the privilege of being Gerry Cooney's promoter in his return what 5 fights would you put him in?
Leading up to a championship fight
If you were referring to a comeback circa 1984 after his first and most telling loss to Larry Holmes in 1982, I would not have put him against Phil Brown, George Chapin and Eddie Gregg who despite having an overall fight record of 68-7-5 among them were not the types of fighters that would have prepared him for his eventual title challenge versus then already champion Michael Spinks.
Cooney dispatched those three comeback foes in a total of just eight rounds, with the erstwhile unbeaten Brown lasting the longest (4th round TKO) and his last opponent prior to facing Spinks, also then unbeaten Gregg exiting the fastest in just over a minute of the first round !
Clearly, the wins over those tomato cans with highly deceiving fight records that were registered in a long two year span serve only to give Cooney a false sense of confidence which Spinks eventually uncovered in sending Cooney crashing down twice before stopping him inside just five rounds in their 1987 fight.
If I were his promoter, I would have Cooney fight more and regularly and that five fights you are asking for would have been enough to prepare him for the championship by 1987.
I would have ranged Cooney against Lucien Rodriguez, Renaldo Snipe, Scott Frank, Carl Williams and finally Tim Witherspoon in increasing level of competition. Those fighters somehow approximated the size and fighting style of both Holmes and Spinks, thus preparing him better and giving him a better chance.
