What's the true story of Aaron Pryor and Ray Leonard? Did Leonard really duck him?

Great question. It's one that will be dabated for years with no likely definite answers. Pryor will tell you that Leonard ducked him. Leonard will never give you a straight answer. But, as great and beloved as he was, that's one of the more annoying things about Leonard. He did things "His Way" and that's admirable. But that didn't always work well for the fans.

By many accounts, some on boxing circles say that Ray did duck Aaron. If you look at the time-line, it might give a better picture.

It's hard to imagine Leonard ducking Aaron Pryor, yet facing Hearns, Benitez and Duran. Personally, I don't think any of the top fighters between lightweight and welterweight wanted to take any chances with Pryor. Mike McCallum would suffer the same indignity later. However, if you take a closer look, it could shed some light on why Leonard and Pryor never fought.

Pryor beat Hearns up in the amateurs. But he was more mature than Hearns. There is a big difference in the three years between them when they're both still young. The story might have been different had they fought in the pros.

Again, looking at the timeline, you have to consider Leonard's "Super Fight" schedule. I honestly think it's more a matter of Pryor not fitting into the schedule, than Leonard ducking him.

Let's take a look:

Leonard's string of superfights began with Wilfred Benitez in Nov. 1979. He then faced Roberto Duran in June 1980. He lost that fight and won the rematch against Duran, later in the same year. He fought Larry Bonds in March 1981. He went on to face Tommy Hearns in Sept. 1981. Between the Duran rematch and the Hearns fight, Leonard faced Ayab Kalule for the Jr. middleweight title, June 1981.

After facing Hearns in 81, Leonard defended the title against Bruce Finch in Feb. 82 then retired because of a detached retina.

Aaron Pryor won his first title in Aug. 1980, against Antonio Cervantes. By this time, Leonard was already on his way to the rematch with Duran.

Pryor moved up to 140 because none of the lightweights wanted anything to do with him. Now, I think there is a much stronger argument that the lightweights ducked him then any that Leonard, a full-fledged welterweight, ducking him.

If ever there was a time to fit Pryor into his schedule, it would have to have been between the Duran rematch and the Kalule fight. He could have faced Pryor instead of facing Larry Bonds. But, if I remember correctly, Pryor was more interested in fighting Ray Mancini.

After Mancini's manager, Dave Wolf, made it clear that he would not put Ray against Pryor, Aaron focused his attention to Leonard. By that time, Leonard was preparing for Hearns. The only other time to fight Pryor would have been after Hearns.

I'm not sure why Leonard fought Finch but I do believe his intentions were to prepare for a move to the middleweight division. However, Leonard made it clear that he did not feel he was ready for Hagler and showed little interest in a rematch with Hearns.

I think he would have taken a rematch with Hearns over a fight with Pryor because he might have viewed it as a more marketable fight. However, Hearns' camp wanted it at 154. I don't think Leonard wanted to face Hearns at 154, where Tommy was clearly at his best. The detached retina changed everything.

Pryor faced Arguello twice between late 82 and Sept. 83. By the time Leonard made a comeback against Kevin Howard in 84, Pryor had already begun a downward slide which started with a heavy party life after the second Arguello fight.

The point is that I think Bad Timing and the fact that the "Leonard Pond" was FILLED during the best possible times for a Pryor fight, stood in the way more than any reluctance on Leonard's part.

For what it's worth, I think Leonard would have won, had they met. He would simply carry 147 better because it was his natural weight. Pryor moved to 140 only because no one would face him at 135. I don't think he would have carried 147 well. He's strong, tenacious and takes a punch better than anyone during that era so his heart and talent would take him the distance but Leonard would have prevailed.
